Establishing Successful Literacy Routines for a New School Year

The beginning of the school year brings excitement and the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a productive learning environment. One crucial component of this foundation involves creating effective literacy routines. By investing time into this process, we ensure our classrooms are not only orderly but also nurturing spaces where students thrive in both skill acquisition and confidence.

The Importance of Classroom Norms

Establishing classroom norms that align with school-wide values helps set a respectful and conducive learning atmosphere. These norms, when practiced consistently, reassure students by creating predictable routines. For instance, in my Year 5/6 classroom, turning to face someone who is speaking to us aligns with our value of respect, reinforcing positive behavior while supporting emotional safety and engagement.

Starting Small and Being Intentional

In my experience, introducing literacy routines should be gradual and deliberate. I focus on a select number of routines that I anticipate using frequently across different lessons. During the initial weeks, I dedicate time to teach and practice these routines, ensuring they are ingrained into daily classroom activities.
