Every paper is drawn from that pool at the moment a student sits down, and questions they met in recent sittings are held back. A Year 7 student answering 148 questions has 700 to draw from - so a second attempt is a genuinely different paper, not the same one again. We're adding new items to the bank all the time, so the pool grows and the number of unique sittings a student can have increases. No two attempts will be identical, and the more they practise, the more they will see.
Every domain except Year 3 writing is sat online and tailored, so difficulty branches with the student and no two sit an identical paper. Counts are the published test-design specification and can move by an item or two between years. Source: nap.edu.au.

Are these real NAPLAN tests?
No. They are original practice tests written in the style of NAPLAN. No NAPLAN material is reproduced, and Litzi has no connection to ACARA.
Can my child sit the same test twice?
Each paper is assembled when they start, and questions from their recent sittings are held back - so a second attempt is a new paper.
What if my child needs extra time?
Every paper can be sat untimed. A parent or teacher can also grant extra time, or set a student to untimed permanently.
Do I need a Litzi reading subscription too?
No. NAPLAN-style practice stands on its own. If you buy the family plan you also get access to our levelled reading library at no extra cost.
What if it's not right for us?
Tell us within 14 days of joining and we'll refund you in full - no questions asked, and you don't need to justify it. The guarantee covers your first purchase; after that you can still cancel any time and simply won't be billed again.

Practice Tests
Your child sits a full-length paper in a clean, distraction-free screen - one question at a time, with a question navigator so they can skip and come back exactly as they would in the real thing.
The clock is run by our servers, not the browser, so it can't be paused or fiddled with. If the connection drops mid-test it pauses automatically and waits for them, rather than quietly eating their time.
Everything they type is saved as they go. A closed laptop is an inconvenience, not a lost afternoon.
A closer look at each paper
Four papers, the same four NAPLAN assesses. Here's what your child sits in each.
Reading
Your child reads a series of original passages - a story, an article, an argument - and answers questions on each. The passages are written for the year level and set in places an Australian child recognises, and every question can be answered from the passage in front of them; nothing depends on knowing the topic beforehand.
The questions work at three levels: finding something the text says outright, working out something it implies, and judging why the writer made a choice. The balance shifts as the years go up - a Year 3 paper leans on locating detail, while a Year 9 paper asks far more often what the writer was trying to do to you. Passages sit alongside the questions rather than on a separate screen, and the text-size control grows the passage and the question together.
Writing
One task, forty minutes. Your child is given either a narrative prompt - a starting point to build a story from - or a persuasive one, a proposition with two defensible sides that they have to argue. A short planning scaffold sits above the writing space, and a live word count runs beside it. Everything saves as they type.
It's then marked against the ten assessment criteria, from audience and text structure through to paragraphing, punctuation and spelling, with a comment on each rather than a single number. Spelling and sentence structure carry marks here, so the browser's own spellchecker and autocorrect are switched off for that box - the point is to see what your child can do unaided.
Language Conventions
Spelling, grammar and punctuation, in short questions that come quickly. A spelling question shows a sentence with one word underlined and asks for it correctly spelt; a grammar or punctuation question usually offers four versions of a sentence where only one is right. It's the paper where a student's instinct for how written English works either holds up or doesn't.
The ground it covers widens considerably between Year 3 and Year 9 - homophones, plurals and apostrophes early on, then clause structure, modality and the punctuation of complex sentences later. Australian spelling throughout: colour, centre, organise, practise as the verb.
Numeracy
Number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability - fractions and percentages, area and volume, angles, coordinates, reading data from a table, working out how likely something is. Questions are set in situations rather than left bare: a shopping total, a bus timetable, a netball court.
From Year 7 numeracy becomes two separate papers. One is sat without a calculator, where the numbers stay friendly and the skill being tested is the mathematics rather than the long division. The other assumes one, with an on-screen calculator built into the test screen, and the numbers are allowed to be as awkward as real ones are.
Results & Reports
The mark arrives the moment they hand in. More usefully, so does the reason for it: every question comes with a worked solution written to your child, and an explanation of why the tempting wrong answer was tempting.
Results break down by sub-skill and sort weakest first, so “18 out of 30” becomes “fractions and time need work, comprehension is solid”. Sit another paper next month and you can see whether that changed.

What's tested at each year level
NAPLAN assesses Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Here's what our practice papers cover for each.
The first year of NAPLAN. For most children this is their first formal test of any kind, so the papers are as much about getting used to the format - reading a question carefully, managing a clock, moving on when stuck - as they are about content.
A noticeable step up from Year 3. Passages get longer, questions ask why rather than what, and numeracy moves from single operations to problems with more than one step.
First year of secondary school, and the format changes. Numeracy splits into two separate papers - one with a calculator, one without - and reading passages start to include the kind of text students meet across other subjects.
The last NAPLAN year, and the most demanding. Reading and writing expect a genuine line of argument, and numeracy reaches into algebra, indices and the beginnings of trigonometry.
