Year 7 NAPLAN Practice Tests for 2027

What the Year 7 tests actually cover - reading, writing, conventions of language and numeracy - and how to practise for them without your child sitting the same paper twice.

Year 7 is the first NAPLAN of secondary school, and the format itself changes: numeracy splits into two separate papers, one without a calculator and one with. Reading starts to include the kind of text students meet in science, history and geography rather than only in English.

It is also the first year where students are expected to sustain an argument in writing rather than simply state a view, and where marks are lost to unfinished work as often as to wrong answers.

Two numeracy papers. The first section is sat without a calculator and is about arithmetic fluency - whether a student can work with number confidently in their head and on paper. An on-screen calculator becomes available for the remainder of the test. Students who reach for a calculator by habit tend to find the non-calculator section the hardest part of the whole NAPLAN, and it is the most improvable with practice.

The Year 7 tests

Reading

Denser texts, across more subject areas.
  • Evaluating an argument - what is the writer claiming, what evidence is offered, and is it enough?
  • Tone and viewpoint - recognising when a writer is being sceptical, enthusiastic or dismissive.
  • Connecting ideas between paragraphs, and following a line of reasoning across a whole text.
  • Technical and subject vocabulary in informative texts.
  • Interpreting graphs, diagrams and captions as part of the text rather than decoration.
  • Comparing two texts that treat the same topic differently.

Question formats include multiple choice alongside interactive types such as drag-and-drop and selecting words directly in the passage.

Writing

One task, 40 minutes. Years 7 and 9 receive a different prompt from Years 3 and 5.
  • A sustained position in persuasive writing - a line of argument developed across paragraphs, not one point repeated.
  • Structural control - an introduction that sets up the piece and a conclusion that does more than restate it.
  • Cohesion across the whole text, which carries increasing weight at this level.
  • Precision of vocabulary, including subject-appropriate and evaluative language.
  • Punctuation within sentences - commas, semicolons, colons and dashes used deliberately.

The same ten criteria are used as in primary school, so a student's report can be compared with earlier years - but the standard expected against each criterion rises.

Conventions of Language

Spelling first, then grammar and punctuation.
  • Clause analysis - main and subordinate clauses, and how they are joined.
  • Punctuation within sentences - semicolons, colons, dashes and brackets.
  • Modality - the difference must, should and might make to a claim.
  • Etymological spelling - words built from Greek and Latin roots, common in science and humanities.
  • Active and passive voice, and why a writer would choose one.
  • Ambiguity - spotting when a sentence could be read two ways.

Numeracy - without a calculator

Arithmetic fluency, worked mentally and on paper.
  • Integers - adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with negative numbers.
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages, and converting between them.
  • Order of operations, including brackets and indices.
  • Estimation and mental strategies - knowing when an answer is roughly right.
  • Ratio and simple proportion.
  • Index notation and square roots of familiar numbers.

Numeracy - with a calculator

Problem solving, where the arithmetic is not the point.
  • Rates and ratio - unit pricing, speed, and scaling recipes or plans.
  • Algebra - substituting into a formula, solving simple linear equations, and finding the rule of a pattern.
  • Angles and geometric reasoning - angle sums, parallel lines, and properties of shapes.
  • Area, volume and surface area, including composite shapes and prisms.
  • Statistics - mean, median, mode and range, and interpreting a range of graph types.
  • Probability - single and simple two-step events.

How to practise for Year 7 without repeating the same test

The problem with a practice book is that the second sitting measures memory rather than reading. Once a child has seen a paper, their score on it tells you almost nothing.
